Kitchen Apron- A great garden tool!

The sales of our Cathedral Window Kitchen Aprons have grown faster than any other product!  Among other reasons, wHandmade Kitchen Aprone think that part of the apron's newfound popularity is the fact that all things retro are in vogue.   There are, of course, many other reasons customers purchase kitchen aprons.  While we could hypothesize all day long why people are suddenly purchasing kitchen aprons, today we'd like to think about other ways to use them! We believe that most folks buy our kitchen aprons for just that- to use them in the kitchen!

But if you read Reminisce or other nostalgic magazines, you'll see that aprons were an important part of every working woman's life.  And their work didn't start and stop in the kitchen! No, aprons were used for many things outdoors.  And we happen to think some of them are still great reasons to purchase and use a kitchen apron!  Here are some we can think of....

  1. Aprons were used for a WASH CLOTH.
  2. Aprons were GREAT BASKETS.
  3. Aprons were used to KEEP TOOLS handy.
  4. Aprons were used for PROTECTION.

Kitchen aprons were used as WASH CLOTHS to wipe or wash something when nothing else was handy.  To wipe away a child's tear, to polish an apple, or to wipe away some dust or dirt on a kitchen table... a kitchen apron might do all of the above in a single day!  The apron was truly a integral part of life.

Kitchen aprons were used as BASKETS when working outdoors.  Perhaps it was to carry garden seeds out for spring planting, and to bring the harvest back into the home.  After all, if there were only a few strawberries it wasn't worth taking a basket  out!  Besides, you were only planning to weed and saw a few luscious berries....  Aprons could also be used to carry eggs in from the hen house.

Kitchen aprons were used to carry TOOLS.  The pockets could store amazing things: a needle, thread, and scissors when mending, or even a handkerchief for various uses.  When gardening, they could carry a pruners, trowel, or other various garden tools.

Kitchen aprons were a useful means of PROTECTION!  When wildly flapping an apron, one could chase away the angry goose or hen whose nest was being robbed.  It could be thrown over the head when making a dash into the house in a rainstorm.

Some people still use aprons in much the same manner.  If you happen to see an Amish or Mennonite grandmother at work, you might still see her wearing an apron.  But not everyone still has the huge vegetable garden or the henhouse today.  We'd like to suggest using our Cathedral Window Kitchen Aprons for the following purposes:

  1. Kitchen aprons are practical!  They will protect your clothes when working in the kitchen, allowing you to focus on cooking that great meal without worrying about keeping your clothes spotless.  When you are done, just whisk off your apron!
  2. Kitchen aprons are great for gardening!  You can stick a trowel and some seeds in the pocket when heading out to tend to your garden, whether it be a vegetable garden or just a little flower patch.  Drop a scissors or shears into the pocket and pick a few flowers on your way back into your home!

Our kitchen aprons are handmade in our home.  While the Cathedral Window pattern appears to be hand quilted, they are machine stitched for durability.  When they are soiled, just drop them into the washing machine- there is no need to hand wash them!  They are available in many of our popular prints, and may be custom ordered in a print of your choice.  Just contact us for your special request!  And, of course, if you intend to use your apron for kitchen duty, why not purchase a matching Cathedral Window Table Runner, Placemats, Country Style Table Runner, or Pot Holder?
